Mrs. West graduated from Louisiana State University (LSU) with a double degree in elementary education and special education-mental retardation. She has taken numerous graduate classes at LSU and Southeastern Louisiana University. She has earned and maintained an elementary religious education certification and attended numerous workshops. She has been a member of the National Catholic Educations Association since 1977. She is a member of the Saint Margaret Mary Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and is a PTO Board Member. Previously, she was PTO (Guild) Secretary for both the PTO and Board.
Mrs. West has taught 1st grade at SMM since she graduated in 1977. She stayed home one year after she had her daughter, Michelle.
Mrs. West loves teaching. She especially enjoys teaching children to read. She explains, "They begin reading words, then phrases, sentences, and then whole stories! It is so exciting to witness! I enjoy the rewards - hugs, kisses, drawings, notes, and 'I love you'."
In 1984, Mrs. West was awarded SMM Teacher of the Year and selected for Who's Who among American Teachers. Her greatest reward is watching children grow and achieve in both their academic and Christian development.
